We know you might have questions about our Rubber Equine Surfacing, so we’ve answered some of the most common ones from customers across Perth and Australia below.

What is Throughcycle Equine Surfacing and why is it used in equestrian arenas?

Throughcycle Equine Surfacing is a premium equine surfacing additive made in Western Australia from 100% recycled tyres. Its 8 to 15 millimetre rubber particles are mixed into arena sand to reduce impact on horses’ joints, improve drainage, minimise dust, and extend the life of your surface. It’s designed for all equestrian disciplines, including competition, training, and rehabilitation.

How much Rubber Equine Surfacing do I need for my arena?

Application rates typically range from 5 to 15 kilograms per square metre, depending on your riding discipline, arena size, and existing footing. Light-use arenas may need as little as 5–8 kg/m², while jumping and high-impact areas often require 10–15 kg/m² for optimal shock absorption and fibre support. For best results, the rubber should blend through the top 50 to 70 percent of your footing depth. Use our Equine Surfacing Arena Calculator to get a quick and accurate estimate tailored to your surface.

Why is 8 to 15mm rubber better than smaller rubber crumb?

Larger particles like 8 to 15mm provide better shock absorption, resist being kicked up by hooves, and help create stable, well-draining footing. Smaller rubber crumb can compact too much, float or migrate, and doesn’t offer the same joint protection or consistency.

Can I install Throughcycle Equine Surfacing myself?

Yes. Throughcycle Equine Surfacing is DIY-friendly. Spread evenly over your surface and mix in with a rotary harrow, arena groomer, or basic drag. Our 500kg bulka bags are great for large arenas. Most users complete the job in a weekend.

Is Throughcycle Equine Surfacing compatible with my existing surface?

Throughcycle Equine Surfacing works best with washed or angular sand but can be blended with most sand-based arena footings. If your surface is heavy in clay or silt, a base adjustment may be recommended. Our team can review your current setup and advise accordingly.

How long does Throughcycle Equine Surfacing last?

Throughcycle Equine Surfacing lasts 8 to 10 years with minimal maintenance. Unlike woodchips or organic materials, rubber doesn’t decompose. You may need a small top-up after several years in high-traffic zones, but most surfaces remain consistent for years without full replacement.

Is Rubber Equine Surfacing safe for horses, riders, and handlers?

Yes. Throughcycle Equine Surfacing is cleaned, screened, and tested to ensure it’s safe and free from harmful contaminants. The 8 to 15mm particles are too large to inhale or ingest, and they don’t splinter or cause abrasions. It’s a safe, non-toxic upgrade for your surface.

How does Throughcycle Equine Surfacing perform in wet or dry weather?

Throughcycle Equine Surfacing provides excellent year-round performance. It drains quickly after rain, stays softer than sand in summer heat, and retains moisture to reduce dust. In drought-prone or flood-prone conditions, it helps keep your arena usable more days of the year.

Does Throughcycle Equine Surfacing reduce arena maintenance?

Absolutely. With Throughcycle Equine Surfacing, you’ll spend less time watering, harrowing, and re-levelling your surface. It resists compaction and stays mixed evenly, which means fewer hours on the tractor and more time riding.

Is Throughcycle Equine Surfacing an environmentally responsible choice?

Yes. Throughcycle Equine Surfacing repurposes end-of-life tyres into a long-lasting surfacing solution. It helps reduce landfill waste, cuts water usage, and supports circular economy practices. Choosing Rubber Equine Surfacing means a safer ride and a cleaner planet.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“Since installing Rubber Equine Surfacing, my horses move more freely and confidently, even during extended work. The footing stays consistent year-round, and we’re using less water and harrowing less. I’ve now added it to our warm-up arena and will use it in our round pen next.”

Jessica M. – Dressage Trainer

“With over 30 horses daily, surface quality is key. Rubber Equine Surfacing cut our maintenance and dust issues, especially indoors. Our horses are less stiff, and better drainage means fewer cancelled lessons. It’s improved both horse welfare and business results.”

James W. – Riding School Manager

“As a vet and rider, I recommend Throughcycle Equine Surfacing for rehab and joint care. It offers stable, shock-absorbing footing that supports healing and reduces re-injury risk. It’s become essential in my clinic and is far better than smaller rubber infill options.”

Dr Emma T. – Equine Vet
