The case for end-of-life tyre recycling

Mar 27, 2025

Tyres are designed for longevity, but disposal can become a serious problem at the end of their life. Each year, millions of tyres are discarded through landfill, incineration, or stockpiling, causing environmental damage and public health risks. Without sustainable disposal solutions, tyres continue to pile up, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying pests.

By repurposing end-of-life tyres safely and sustainably, we can reduce waste and conserve valuable materials, all while protecting both our communities and ecosystems.

Regulatory Compliance

Despite concerted efforts, only two local government managed waste management facilities in Western Australia have the capacity to collect, process and dispose of the largest Off-The-Road tyres from haulpacks, often resulting in higher associated costs.

Avoid risks of landfill and stockpiling

More than 50,000 tonnes of OTR tyres are discarded annually in Western Australia.

Built to withstand high temperatures, tyres are not easily ignitable. However, once they catch alight, they are difficult to extinguish. Burning tyres produce highly toxic smoke and soot, while firefighting run-off has been shown to cause significant damage to downstream environments.

Although Perth is a Tyre Landfill Exclusion Zone, end-of-life tyres can still be disposed of at any licenced landfill outside the metropolitan area.

Green Process

As the global push for environmentally-conscious tyre disposal grows, CTS Tyre Recycling recognises that embracing this change earlier, rather than later, will allow our partnering companies to hit the ground running and come out on top in waste management.

We are committed to authenticity. When we declare our dedication to sustainability, we ensure that it is incorporated into every facet of our facility from the ground up, including our own process.

Our Salvadori Recycling and ELDAN Recycling A/S equipment is custom-built to minimise energy consumption and produce zero harmful by-products while downsizing and shredding end-of-life tyres.

We have also integrated two new Daimler Truck Australia Pacific Fuso eCanter 100% electric trucks into our existing fleet, ensuring that even on the road, we contribute to a greener future.

High Value Upcycled Products

Not only does our recycling service offer an environmentally safe method of end-of-life tyre management, but it also upcycles this ‘waste’ into high value and versatile rubber products.

Our state-of-the-art equipment has the capability to transform granulated rubber crumbs into roads, gym matting, acoustic underlay, soft floor flooring, anti-slip mats, and much more.

What was once an environmental burden is now a resource with infinite possibilities.
